Biography of Presenter
Dr. Reza Akhavian is an educator, researcher, and industry consultant. He is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering at San Diego State University (SDSU). He received his Ph.D. in Civil Engineering (focused on Construction Engineering and Management) from the University of Central Florida (UCF) and holds M.S. (UCF, 2012) and B.S. (University of Tehran, 2010) degrees in Civil Engineering. His research focuses on leveraging the potentials of data analytics powered by the recent technology trends such as automation, AI, and robotics to improve the design, construction, and management of civil infrastructure systems. Dr. Akhavian has more than 40 articles published in peer-reviewed journals and conference proceedings and serves as an editorial board member of the ASCE Journal of Construction Engineering and Management and Elsevier Advanced Engineering Informatics. He is a recipient of the US National Science Foundation (NSF) CAREER Award, Engineering News Record California Top 20 under 40 Award, and the ASCE Construction Institute Outstanding Young Professional Award.
Description of Presentation
In this presentation, an overview of how to conduct and present interdisciplinary construction research that converges the advances in data science, AI, and robotics with domain-specific knowledge in construction is provided.

At the end of the presentation students will be able to:
- Describe basic versus applied research;
- Describe interdisciplinary and convergence research in construction; and
- Present interdisciplinary construction research to a range of audience.
