Structural Health Monitoring of Bridges: Integrating OpenBIM, GIS, and IoT in the Breganze Bridge Case Study
DOI: 10.35490/EC3.2026.410
Abstract: Current bridge Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) workflows suffer from semantic disconnection, missing metadata validation, and inefficient model-updating. Addressing these deficiencies, this paper introduces a cloud-based platform. The developed workflow uses Information Delivery Specifications (IDS) for metadata integrity, nests sensors and hosts via IfcElementAssembly and IFC model updates using IfcOpenShell. Validated through the Breganze Bridge case study, the platform enables 3D model visualization, sensors measurements plots and threshold-based alerting. The lasting contribution is an OpenBIM SHM framework that integrates metadata validation, sensor-host linking, and threshold evaluation, bypassing proprietary lock-in and the dual-database integration step from model updating workflows.
