From Analysis to Design: Teaching Algorithm-Aided Design in Structural Engineering

Abstract: The increasing integration of computational tools and automated workflows in structural engineering practice calls for corresponding developments in engineering education. This paper presents TKT4198, a Master’s-level course designed to introduce algorithm-aided design through a project-based, design-oriented format. Drawing partial inspiration from architectural design studios, the course enables structural engineering students to design structural systems from scratch while progressively integrating parametric modelling, finite element reasoning, and basic algorithmic methods. The paper describes the course structure, key assignments, and pedagogical rationale, and reflects on survey-based observations regarding student perceptions.
