Abstract: This study investigates the balance of emission levels from smart buildings with embedded IoT sensors against energy reduction using Integrated Environmental Solution Virtual Environment software. Findings show that the annual energy consumption from smart buildings was reduced by over 38% with smart HVAC and smart lights. The embodied emission level from the smart building increased by 7% at over 2 kgCO2/m2/yr, a drawback that should be considered during the production of IoT materials used in buildings. This study recommends that real-time monitoring, measurement and analyses are carried out to increase renewables penetration into the energy mix.
