Householder readiness for smart, data-driven performance monitoring of homes

Abstract: This paper presents a review and survey findings to establish householder readiness for a smart, data-driven building performance monitoring (BPM) approach for homes. The findings affirm previous knowledge that cost, privacy and data security would drive adoption. More importantly, it found that (a) most householders would likely adopt BPM even if separate from a home improvement scheme. (b) A facilitating environment such as a certified installer scheme coupled with a legal framework; (c) respondents would prefer to be in control of their own data and; (d) incorporating BPM requirements in energy and building regulations, incentivised retrofits and renewables implementation schemes also help.
