Preliminary Experiments with a Hands-On Introduction to Generative Design Techniques Using Tangible Objects

Abstract: This research diverges from the conventional introduction of generative design (GD) through computer-aided design (CAD), opting for hands-on experiments. Shape Grammar (SG) and Cellular Automata (CA) techniques are explored using a tangible toolkit, distinct from CAD sessions. Students engage in separate sessions to apply these techniques, employing a think-aloud protocol and video recording for data capture. The study aims to uncover patterns in students’ thought processes and assess if tangible exercises can instill confidence and interest in GD. The paper outlines the experimental setup, presenting preliminary results and discussing implications for teaching and GD tool development.
