Leveraging Classification Knowledge for Improved Data Accessibility of Data in Digital Construction

Abstract: The widespread use of complex structures like Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) in digital building models has valid reasons. Still, it also creates challenges regarding data accessibility and understanding across various projects and companies. This paper proposes an innovative approach to representing existing classification systems in the machine- and human-readable IDS format developed by buildingSMART. The classification rationale, formalized and mapped, provides a unified basis for stakeholders, integrating knowledge from models and simplifying the use of digital models. This initiative aims to foster greater collaboration and standardization in the digital construction industry, significantly enhancing overall project efficiency.
