TREES, PRIVACY AND USERS: THE SOCIAL LIFE OF A DIGITAL TWIN

Abstract: Although digital twins (DT) have been promoted as technical solutions in facility management, their adoption is a social process. This study addresses the gap in the socio-technical understanding of how DTs are enacted in practice. To understand how practices emerge, this study uses Social Construction of Technology (SCOT) framework and its interpretative flexibility component to present the development of a DT of a cemetery. Using vignette-based ethnography, the findings illustrate how the DT creation process is shaped by user interpretations, as well as social and environmental conditions. Overall, this study contributes an empirically grounded sociotechnical account of a DT creation.
